Jose Rizal University staved off Arellano University’s spirited rally in the dying seconds on Monday as the Heavy Bombers pulled off a 67-64 victory that gave them the third Final Four slot in the 86th NCAA cage wars at The Arena in San Juan.

The Bombers thought they had the game all wrapped up after erecting a 64-48 advantage eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter behind Cameroonian John Njei and Fil-Am Nate Matute.

But the Chiefs turned to Adrian Celada, who made nine of his season-high 30 points in a sizzling fourth-quarter salvo that sent the Bombers in disarray.

A charity split by Njei off a Celada foul put an end to JRU’s seven-minute drought, giving the Bombers a precarious 65-61 lead, 42.8 seconds left before Celada retaliated with a trey that sent shivers down JRU’s spine.

John Lopez saved the day for JRU with a layup to close out scoring with 19 seconds to go as Celada’s attempt from downtown rimmed out at the buzzer, thanks to Njei’s air-tight defense.

The win boosted JRU’s record to 9-3 and it enabled the Bombers to enter the semifinals for the fourth straight time.

The loss sent Arellano reeling on the ropes with a 4-8 slate, putting it further behind fourth-running Mapua, which has a 7-4 mark.

In the other seniors game, San Sebastian came back from 10 points down as it edged a game Perpetual Help squad, 72-63, to inch closer to leader San Beda (11-0) with its 11th win in 12 matches.

Calvin Abueva came through with an MVP-like performance with 14 points, 19 rebounds, three blocks and two assists while John Raymundo had 14 points, six feeds and four boards.

The Altas, who were led by Justine Alano's 15 points, fell to their 11th straight setback.

Earlier in the day, the Light Bombers whipped the Junior Chiefs, 91-83, but not after three players were thrown out for rough play.

The game turned ugly in the fourth period with the Light Bombers ahead, 74-70, with 5:56 left when Arellano’s Brando Guibone punched Daniel Tamayo in the head after a scramble for the loose ball.

A commotion ensued but Guibone claimed he just came to the rescue of a teammate who was earlier elbowed by Tamayo.

Pacquiao back in RP for training, Congress

Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao revealed that he told “Tijuana Tornado” Antonio Margarito of Mexico to train hard for their November 13 fight.

But the Filipino boxing icon said that not to warn the Mexican but to remind him to be prepared to give a good show to the fans at the Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas as well as the millions who will be watching at home.

“Sabi ko ‘mag-training ka nang mabuti,” Pacquiao told reporters at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday. “Kailangan magandang performance ang maibigay natin sa tao.”

The 7-division world champion and Sarangani province Rep. Manny Pacquiao is back in the country to buckle down to business as a boxer and congressman.

Pacquiao, who arrived in Manila from Los Angeles, California Monday morning, said he is set to start jogging this week.

“This week, mag-start na tayo mag-training. Jogging muna, pa-kundisyon,” he said. “Tapos ‘yung gym siguro next week na mag-start. But now pa jogging-jogging muna, pa-condition muna kasi malayo pa ‘yung fight. Dalawang buwan pa so may time pa."

He also assured that he will be able to balance his training with his attendance in congressional sessions.

“Walang problema. Ang Congress naman namin ay 4 o'clock [in the afternoon] ang start ng session so from morning to the afternoon, diba wala namang ginagawa? Ano ang gagawin natin? Training,” he stated.

Pacquiao will aim to win his 8th world title when he faces Margarito for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) super welterweight belt.

He mentioned that he is not worried about facing the much taller and heavier Mexican.

“Gusto ko ‘yung mga challenge na fight,” he remarked. “Gagawin natin ang lahat ng makakaya natin.”

He also commented, “Parang matangkad pa siya kay [Oscar] de la Hoya eh. Mas mataas kay Oscar yata pero okey lang, pag-aralan nating mabuti ‘yung strategy.”

Margarito stands at 5’11 while de la Hoya’s height is 5’10’’. Pacquiao, on the other hand, stands at 5’6.5’’.

Pacquiao also had something to say about Margarito’s character.

“Parang nababaitan ako sa kaniya. Akala ko magsalita siya ng masama pati kampo niya,” he stated. “Hindi ‘yung inaakala ko… Pinuri pa nila ako nung presscon.”

ISTANBUL —Those predicting that the United States will fall short of a world championship are focusing on the back of the jerseys.

They no longer include names such as BRYANT or JAMES.

Those expecting the Americans to win anyway do so because of what’s still on the front.

“I think there is a certain element that does persist that because we have USA on our jersey, that’s good enough," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said. “And as the world competition has improved, it gets very challenging, especially with a young, inexperienced group of guys, regardless of how much talent we have.

“Personally, I’d rather be hunted like that than the opposite."

Colangelo and coach Mike Krzyzewski say they are satisfied with what they’ve seen from the undefeated Americans, who face Angola in an elimination game Monday in the round of 16.

But fans and media in Turkey seem to expect a higher level, one reachable by the star-studded Olympic gold medalists of two years ago but maybe not by a young team that hasn’t been together nearly as long.

They expect the U.S. not only to win the tournament, but also every game and perhaps even every quarter along the way. Krzyzewski always faces similar expectations at Duke, where he says “people think we should win every game and not let anyone score."

“I don’t want that to be what this team feels," he said, allowing he’d be OK with any criticisms if he’d brought back the team from Beijing.

“If we had all the main guys here, you should nitpick anything, because that’s the world they live in. They always have to (play well)," Krzyzewski said. “We have a young group. I think our guys have done great and part of it, this is the first experience.

“I think they’ve been terrific and now they get a chance to do something that will be a momentous thing in their careers if they can, in the next eight days, if they can get it done. I would like for them to be youthfully enthusiastic and try to accomplish something instead of trying to be perfect or whatever. Being perfect is about those other guys."

The Americans blew out their first two opponents, then needed a miss at the buzzer by Brazil’s Leandro Barbosa to eke out a 70-68 victory. They closed group play with easy wins over Iran and Tunisia, but neither was a start-to-finish rout. The U.S. led the winless African champions by just four points early in the third quarter.

The U.S. ended up winning 92-57, but center Lamar Odom was pressed about why it took so long to break away from what seemed such an overmatched opponent.

“You can’t win by 40 in the first three minutes of a game if you really think about how the game is played," Odom said. “That means you stop them and then you score every time. No mistakes. You’re human, you’re going to have human errors. You’re going to bounce the ball off a leg, three seconds, missed layup, a missed jumper. That’s just the way the game goes."

Odom was in the U.S. team that lost three times in the 2004 Olympics before leaving with a bronze medal. The Americans finished sixth two years earlier in Indianapolis in the worlds, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that victory isn’t guaranteed just by sending five players on the floor wearing red, white and blue. The U.S. hasn’t even won a world title since 1994.

Yet that hasn’t seemed to way the international basketball community, where many—such as Iran’s coach—still call the U.S. a Dream Team. Never mind that the people who assembled it certainly wouldn’t.

“People don’t understand, that’s what sometimes frustrates me," forward Kevin Durant said. “Fans don’t understand that this is a hard game to play, especially international basketball. It’s a lot different from the NBA game and the players are a lot different.

“Everybody can shoot, from the 4 to the 5, and that right there puts pressure on your defense, because you can’t help as much. We’re not going to win every game by 30 or 20, or maybe even 10. As long as we go out there and get the job done, at the end of the day, it’s all about wins."

The U.S. needs four more to claim the gold medal. Noting that world records in track events aren’t usually set during the qualifying rounds, when competitors just want to advance and peak later, Krzyzewski isn’t concerned with always looking good along the way.

But the Americans know they will hear about it whenever they don’t.

Roach: I don't think Mayweather-Pacquiao will happen

Freddie Roach doesn't see a Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight ever taking place. Negotiations have been falling apart since they started last year.

Twice Pacquiao has been forced to accept bouts against substitute opponents like Joshua Clottey and Antonio Margarito. When BoxingScene.com's Jose Aguirre spoke with Roach, he asked the trainer of Pacquiao if he believes Mayweather will accept a fight with the Filipino champion in the future, and Roach replied with one word - "no."

When asked for his reasons as to why - Roach told BoxingScene - "He waits for Manny to sign a contract with someone else, so he doesn't have to be pressured into fighting Pacquiao. He wants to keep the zero on his record so he can argue that he's the best fighter in the world. So he can say that he's better than Sugar Ray Robinson. As long as he has that zero, he can make an argument, but once that zero is gone - the argument is over."

Roach doesn't understand Mayweather's thinking because some of the best fighters in the history of the sport were beaten several times on the road to becoming great.

"A loss is a part of life. A loss can make you better. Actually, it's good to lose sometimes in our lives to improve ourselves, to get a wake up call. In Floyd's little mind, he's content with that zero. How can he say that he's better than Sugar Ray Robinson at this point in his life? Robinson had a couple hundred fights out there. He's a master of the game and he was a better welterweight than he was a middleweight. But we only have tape of him as a great middleweight. We never really saw the best of him," Roach said.

"But when he compares himself to those type of guys, it doesn't sit with me too well because he won't even fight the best guys out there today. He actually ducked Margarito a couple of years ago also. He was offered a lot of money to fight him twice and ducked him. He picks and chooses his opponents and if that's what he's going to be happy with....so be it."

Look who’s being eyed by new B-Meg Derby Ace coach Jorge Gallent.

Mick Pennisi, a 6-foot-9, grizzled veteran slotman, is now on top of the wish list of the Llamados, who want to shore up their decimated frontline and boost their title retention bid in the PBA Philippine Cup.

The Philippine Cup is the opening conference of the Philippine Basketball Association’s 36th season, which begins October 3.

“He’s (Mick) first in our wish list. We really need a five man right now," Gallent told GMANews.TV in a telephone interview. “But we’re also looking at other options, including signing up veteran free agent center Romel Adducul.

Adducul is one those players, whose contract expired. The 6-foot-5, many-time national team member, is still practicing with the team and Gallent is keeping an open mind of including him on the roster.

“No assurance that we will get Romel, but right now, I would say there’s a 70-percent chance B-Meg Derby Ace might get him," added Gallent.

The Llamados have yet to sign up another frontliner, Don Allado, who just arrived from a vacation in the United States.

But the possible inclusion of Pennisi is one of the things being anticipated in the off season.

Still, the Llamados will need to get a third team to act as conduit in able to get Pennisi from his current squad, San Miguel Beer. Under PBA rules, sister teams like B-Meg Derby Ace and San Miguel Beer cannot trade directly and a third team is needed in order for the trade to push through.

Pennisi is seriously being considered by the Llamados as two of their main frontliners – Kerby Raymundo and Marc Pingris – underwent operation.

Just recently, the Llamados were able to tab the services of free agent Jerwin Gaco from Barako Bull.

The 6-foot-4 Gaco played for Gallent’s multi-titled Harbour Centre team in the Philippine Basketball League.

“He’s a free agent, so we were able to secure his services," said Gallent. “Right now, we really need to shore up our frontline with the absence of Kerby and Ping." - GMANews.TV

ISTANBUL (AFP) — Slovenia and Turkey routed their opponents in the round of 16 on Sunday to set up a quarter-final encounter at the world basketball championships.

Australia was completely out-muscled by Slovenia who won with ease 87-58 while Turkey cruised to a 95-77 win over France.

Australia started slowly and would never completely recover, failing to score a point in the first six and a half minutes and shooting at just 22 percent from the field for the first half.

The Australian shooting was much more accurate early in the second half as they looked to spark a revival.

Unfortunately for them, Slovenia also lifted their shooting accuracy.

Although the second game of the day began as a close encounter, Turkey were able to build of the support of their frenzied home crowd, pulling away to win 95-77.

After a tight opening quarter, 24 points from the Turkish in the second saw them pull out to a 48-23 lead at half-time.

Like the Australians, the French could not break down the deficit in the second half, with too many turnovers damaging any realistic chances they had of fighting their way back.

“We got outplayed in the first quarter and struggled to get back in – there was too much pressure on the inexperienced guys,” said Australia captain Matthew Nielsen.

Slovenia player Uros Slokar was full of praise for the steps forward his team has made at these championships.

“At the beginning of this national team cycle we wanted to make the quarters. Now we have made it,” he said.

“We have achieved more than the previous world championships and this is the most important thing as we have made one step forward.”

Manny Pacquiao wants to continue making a mark in the boxing world by being a warrior in battle and a kindhearted person outside the ring.

The 7-division world champion said this amid the latest controversy involving him and American Floyd Mayweather, Jr., who hurled racial slurs against the Filipino champion last week.

The unbeaten American boxer has apologized for his comments.

“Wala akong hinanakit sa kaniya... Hindi ako nagbigay ng komento sa mga message niya, sa mga pahayag niya. Sabi ko nga ayaw kong magbigay ng comment. Ayokong patulan ‘yung uneducated na pahayag ni Mayweather. Sarili niya ‘yun. Ganun ang style niya so hayaan na,” Pacquiao told media members at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday.

Pacquiao came from the United States where he took part in the media tour to promote his November 13 fight with Mexican Antonio Margarito.

He noted that there was no trash talk in the 3 press conferences held in California, New York and Texas.

“Gusto ko kasing ituwid yung ibang boksingero na paniwala boxing... kahit sa presscon palang mag-away-away na, mag-trash talk, mga ‘di maganda salita. ‘Di maganda sa tao, ‘di maganda sa publiko ‘yun,” the boxer-turned-congressman commented.

“Puwede ka naman maging magaling na boksingero, magaling na atleta na walang binibitawan masakit na salita, walang nakakapanira ng puri… at kailangan ‘yung Panginoon laging umiiral,” he added.

He also said that he does not want to comment further on the issue to protect his name as well as the interests of his fans.

“Bilang Manny Pacquiao na maraming sumusubaybay sa fight ko… kailangang ipakita natin ang magandang halimbawa na ikaw ay may sportsmanship, maginoo, marunong rumespeto,” he said.

“Siyempre ‘di naman tayo pumasok sa boxing para manlait ng tao… Ganun talaga may mga taong ganon. Gusto ko si Manny Pacquiao maging halimbawa sa lahat na makakuha na aral sa akin na hindi por que boxing ito, kailangan na kahit sa outside the ring hindi tayo maging magkaibagan.”

When further pressed to talk about Mayweather, he shared what he told the US media when they were asking him to comment on the racial slurs.

“Sabi ko, ‘I don’t want to give a comment on that because he’s not my opponent.’ Wala naman kaming negosasyon,” stated Pacquiao.

UAAP gears for cheerdance competition 2010

The pep squads of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) member schools are ready to strut their stuff on Sunday when the 2010 UAAP Cheerdance Competition gets underway at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Cheering Squad will aim to defend its title against the Adamson University (AdU) Pep Squad, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) Blue Babble Battalion, De La Salle University (DLSU) Animo Squad, National University (NU) Pep Squad, University of the East (UE) Pep Squad, University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad, and University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe.

The Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion was the 1st runner-up in 2009 while the UP Pep Squad was the 2nd runner-up.

The UAAP pep squads are now calling on their respective school communities to show up at the Big Dome or simply support their bid for cheerdance supremacy.

Several squads made known through their official Facebook pages other ways to support them.

The UP Pep Squad called on UP community members who will troop to the Big Dome to wear a white shirt under a maroon top. They were told to take off their maroon tops and wave them in the air after the UP Pep Squad ends its routine.

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe, meantime, invited its supporters to show their support on Facebook by adding Twibbons to their profile pictures.

The Twibbon reads, “I CHEER GO USTe! UST SALINGGAWI DANCE TROUPE.”

Fayn Artees, a group of designers that makes UAAP shirts, posted on the FEU Cheering Squad Facebook page that it has limited edition shirts for the 2010 UAAP Cheerdance Competition.

The shirt has the text “I cheer for the FEU Cheering Squad.”

Revenge will be on the minds of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante when they launch their title retention bid starting this Tuesday in the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool at the Robinson’s Place Midtown in Manila.

Reyes and Bustamante face off with the Thai duo of Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Surathep Phoochalam at 6 p.m. with the hopes of avenging their 9-ball doubles defeat in last year’s Southeast Asian Games.

The Filipino pair was ousted by the Thais, 7-4, right in their first match of the eliminations in Laos.

“Of course, we want to get back at them,” Reyes, 55, said in Pilipino after the press conference hosted by Solar Sports on Monday.

Learning from their mistakes, Reyes said they should start strong.

“They raced to a 4-0 lead against us and we never recovered,” Reyes said.

The two legends are leaving no stones unturned in their bid to retain the crown they won at the expense of Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet, 11-9, in an enthralling final at the SM North.

That’s why Bustmante, even if he was in Germany last week on some business matters, said he’s perfecting his power breaks, which proved to be his Waterloo last time.

“The fans will help us win because if our rivals hear their roar for us, it will be an advantage,” said Bustamante, who will be inducted to the Billiards Hall of Fame next month, joining "Bata" who made it to the elite roster in 2003.

Reyes and Bustamante, who also topped the maiden edition of the event in 2006, remain the favorites among the 32 teams seeing action in the $250,000 event that dangles $60,000 for the champion duo.

But Souquet and his new partner, Oliver Ortmann, will still post the greatest threat to their quest.

“I am dying for a win,” said Souquet, 41, Europe’s most decorated player. “I haven’t been winning the past three months and this (tournament) is a good opportunity to win.”

Hostilities start at 12 noon this Tuesday with Canada facing Russia, and Indonesia battling India.

The Philippine Patriots have found a major backer in their quest for a second straight Asean Basketball League (ABL) title.

AirAsia recently formalized its tie-up with the Patriots in a partnership that hopefully produces another championship come February.

The Patriots distinguished themselves as the inaugural champions of the fledgling league involving countries within the Asean region. They made history last season when they completed a three-game sweep of the SM Britama of Indonesia for the title.

AirAsia, based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was recently recognized as the best low-cost airline in the world today.

AirAsia has been involved with the ABL from the very beginning, serving as official carrier of the league, which chief executive officer Tony Fernandes considers as one the company’s major thrusts.

AirAsia has also a big stake in the Lotus team in the Formula One Grand Prix.

Tonyboy Cojuangco, co-owner of the Patriots together with sportsman-businessman Mikee Romero, hopes the team’s deal with AirAsia would further boost the airline’s stock among Filipinos and neighboring countries as well.

Romero said they’re forming a competitive team since Indonesians, Malaysians and even Singapore are dead set in spoiling the Patriots’ back-to-back bid.

“We hope we can form the team by the middle of the month and we have to get the best available players around,” said Patriots team manager Erick Arejola

AirAsia representative Maan Hontiveros added that there is a powerful market in the Asean region – an opportunity tourists and travelers should readily take advantage of through the low budget fares offered by the most successful low carrier airline in the world.

And proof of how attractive the booming Asean market is, Hontiveros said Vietnam and Cambodia – as well as one more possible team from the Philippines – have already signified their intention to join the ABL hopefully by its third season.

The second season of the ABL kicks off on Oct. 2 with a game pitting the Kuala Lumpur Dragons against the Thailand Cobras in Malaysia.

The following day, the Patriots begin their title defense by taking on the Brunei Barracudas at the Ynares Sports Arena.

Completing the six-team cast are Muda Britama of Indonesia and the Singapore Slingers.

Ginebra signs 3 rookies

Barangay Ginebra has signed its three rookies – John Wilson, Jimbo Aquino and Robert Labagala – to separate deals over the weekend, giving the Kings a mixture of youth and experienced backcourt in the coming PBA wars beginning this October.

A source who has knowledge with the contract said the both Wilson and Aquino were given almost similar two-year contracts approximately worth P5.7 million, while Labagala got a one-year deal of at least P.8 million.

Wilson and Aquino are expected to solidify the shooting guard and small forward spots for Ginebra as they share playing minutes with former two-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) Willie Miller, Mark Caguioa and JC Intal.

As for Lagabala, he’s expected to play back-up to the Kings’ already loaded point guard position with 2009 MVP Jayjay Helterbrand, Mike Cortez and Celino Cruz.

“With no legitimate big men when it was our turn to take the picks, we settled for the best available talents so we got these guys (Wilson and Wilson) in the first round, and then we added another guard,” Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said.

“We’re happy with what we got. We got player whom we feel can help us, who can be useful in our rotation,” Uichico added.

Smart Gilas Pilipinas steps up Asiad buildup

Smart Gilas Pilipinas is set to play a club team from Korea twice before flying to China for a series of tune-up games as it steps up its buildup for the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China in November.

The Nationals take on the Seoul SK Knights tomorrow and on Sept. 12 at the Ranoc Gym in San Juan before leaving Sept. 13 for Guangdong where they are set to play a series of tournaments against local teams.

“These tune-up games are part of our preparation for the Asian Games because we know September and October would be crucial for our preparation,” said Smart Gilas team manager Frankie Lim.

“Our real target is to play five or more teams before Guangzhou,” he said.

The games against the SK Knights, in particular, are expected to be tough with the Koreans, two-time winner of the Korean Basketball League, very much familiar with the Filipinos’ brand of play, having competed in the PBA several times in the past.

Smart Gilas coach Rajko Toroman, whose wards reached the semis in last month’s Stankovic Cup in Lebanon, however, said they have yet to decide the final roster for the quadrennial meet slated Nov. 12-27.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas had actually submitted an initial list of 15 names that included several top players from the PBA.

Among the pros listed were Asi Taulava, Ryan Reyes, Ranidel de Ocampo, James Yap, Arwind Santos and Sonny Thoss.

Lim clarified though the core of the team consisting of the country’s finest collegiate players selected late in 2008 would remain intact.

“It’s too early to decide the final roster but we’ll wrap it up maybe after our China trip,” said Lim.

The core includes captain Chris Tiu, co-skipper Mark Barroca, JV Casio, Mac Baracael, Dylan Ababou, Japeth Aguilar, Jason Ballesteros, Aldrech Ramos, JR Cawaling, Greg Slaughter and Filipino-foreign player Marcio Lassiter.

American Marcus Douthit, the team’s naturalization candidate, and Fil-for shooting guard Chris Lutz have yet to secure their Filipino passports.

After the Asiad, Smart Gilas is also seeking an Olympic slot in the 2012 London Games through the FIBA-Asia Championship next year in Beirut.

Far Eastern U outduelled Ateneo in four closely-fought sets and pounded out a 24-26, 26-24, 25-20, 25-19 victory to clinch the fourth and last Final Four berth in the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 second conference at The Arena in San Juan yesterday.

The Lady Tams drew double-digit outputs from four players to underscore their determined bid with guest players Rachel Anne Daquis and Michelle Carolino leading the attack with 22 and 21 hits, respectively.

Cherry May Vivas unloaded 16 points while Monique Tiangco added 13 as the Lady Tams outhit the Lady Eagles, 65-46, in their sudden death duel for the last semis seat in the season-ending conference of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza.

FEU, which stopped Ateneo, also in four sets, in the last quarterfinal round playdate to force a playoff, thus took the No. 4 spot in the semis and will face top seed San Sebastian-Excelroof in a best-of-three series.

Adamson, which finished tied for first with SSC at 10-2 but lost in the tiebreak for the No. 1 spot, will take on Lyceum in the other Final Four duel starting Thursday.

Outhit, the Lady Eagles still kept the game close after dropping the second set but Thai import Surasawadee Boonyuen and Fille Cainglet failed to draw the much-needed backup from the rest of the team.

Boonyuen scattered 19 kills and finished with 21 points while Cainglet came through with 10 hits, including nine attacks. But Gretchen Ho was held to just eight hits while Bea Pascual and Denise Acevedo combined for just 13 hits for the Loyola-based squad.

The Lady Tams also controlled the net, coming up with 12 blocks, including six from Carolino while the Eagles drew three blocks from Pascual and finished with seven.

Wenneth Eulalio and Gyzelle Sy also combined for eight hits for the Lady Tams, who thus stayed in the hunt for a crack at a first-ever crown in the league organized by Sports Vision and backed by Accel, Mikasa and Excelroof.

Meralco Bolts sign Marlou Aquino to one-year pact

Marlou Aquino, a 13-year PBA veteran turning 39 next month, isn’t yet about to hang his sneakers.

The 6-foot-9 behemoth got an extended duty in the pro league, signed to a one-conference contract by the Meralco Bolts B-Boys Saturday night.

Aquino will get P250,000 a month.

“That contract can still be renewed but it depends on him. So far, he’s doing well in practice. He’s enthusiastic to play,” Meralco team manager Virgil Villavicencio told The STAR.

“Coach Ryan Gregorio has talked to Marlou. They have high respect for one another. Marlou has been advised the role he’ll play in the team,” Villavicencio added.

Marlou will be the elder statesman in the team teeming with young talents including rookies Bam Gamalinda, Ford Arao, Kazim Mirza and Sean Weinstein.

Gamalinda, Arao, Mirza have signed one-year pacts. Weinstein, the No. 10 pick, gets a longer tenure of two years in his contract he’s set to sign today.

“I think we’ve formed a fighting team. We’ll be there fighting in each game,” said Villavicencio of the Meralco squad built around former Talk n Text top gun Macmac Cardona.

Beau Belga, Gabby Espinas and Dennis Daa will be the other players tending the Meralco frontcourt.

Chris Ross, Pong Escobal and Weinstein rotate at the point, Cardona and Ogie Menor man the off-guard spot while Yousif Aljamal and Bitoy Omolon alternate at small forward position.

Meralco gets to test its mettle as it plays the Singapore Slingers in a tune-up game in Singapore on Sept. 14.

The B-Boys face the Barangay Ginebra Kings in the opener of the 36th PBA season on Oct. 3 at the Araneta Coliseum.

Looking at the team rosters, Gregorio ranks his team sixth behind San Miguel Beer, Talk n Text, B-MEG Derby Ace, Barangay Ginebra and Alaska Milk.

Sta. Lucia, the team taken over by Meralco, was eighth placer in the last Philippine Cup and sixth placer in the last Fiesta Conference.

Defending champion San Sebastian wants to continue its winning ways even as Jose Rizal University aims to bounce back from a devastating setback when they meet separate foes in the 86th NCAA men’s basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Stags tote a 10-1 slate after pulling off a come-from-behind 64-59 victory over the Heavy Bombers on Wednesday. The Recto-based dribblers earned their second consecutive Final Four appearance after Arellano lost to St Benilde two days later.

On Monday, the Stags take on lowly Perpetual Help Altas at 2 p.m. followed by the game between the Heavy Bombers and the Arellano Chiefs at 4 p.m.

San Sebastian went to top Most Valuable Player contender Calvin Abueva, Ronald Pascual and Jonathan Semira to overcome a 13-point deficit and complete a come-from-behind victory over the Mandaluyong-based dribblers.

"We have been playing flat for most part of the season and we can't afford to do that all the time," said coach Ato Agustin, who was recently named as the new coach head coach of the San Miguel Beermen in the PBA.

Once the PBA starts on Oct. 3, Agustin will have to give up his head coaching duties with the Stags as the pro league prohibits head coaches from handling teams from different leagues at the same time.

The Stags barely escaped past the Altas in their first-round encounter, 73-69, and Agustin and his troop expect a tough grind against the Las Piñas-based cagers.

JRU, on the other hand, guns for an outright semifinals berth against Arellano, but the Chiefs don’t want to become laid carpets against the Heavy Bombers, who carry an 8-3 mark.

The Bombers will lean on Cameroonian big man Joe Etame, Raycon Kabigting and JR Bulangis.

The Chiefs are locked in a tie with Letran for fifth place with identical four wins and seven losses records. The loss to the Blazers put coach Leo Isaac and his wards three games behind fourth-placer Mapua (7-4).

Two-time defending champion Ateneo was expected to waltz past University of Santo Tomas the way it manhandled its rival for most part of the game.

That was until the Tigers went berserk.

The Tigers gave the Blue Eagles some anxious moments, turning once looked like a boring game into an exciting finish.

In the end, the España-based dribblers ran out of time and the Blue Eagles averted what could have been one of the biggest breakdowns in the UAAP men’s basketball tournament this season.

The Blue Eagles survived the Tigers, 81-77, Sunday night at the Big Dome, for their 10th win in 13 matches and primed themselves up in their much-awaited, second-round encounter with the league-leading Far Eastern University Tamaraws.

Both teams are already assured of twice-to-beat incentives in the Final Four, but they will battle it out for the top spot in their final elims assignment.

"They started bombing us with three-pointers," said Ateneo coach Norman Black. "It's very difficult to defend a team that shoots like that. But we won, and that's the most important thing."

Ateneo was leading, 73-54, with about five minutes left in the contest, but UST’s top guns, Clark Bautista and Jeric Teng, turned on the heat as they combined for four triples and set up an exciting windup.

UST had a chance to come within striking distance when Bautista knocked in another trey with 36 seconds left and Nico Salva of Ateneo turned the ball over at the other end.

But Melo Afuang, who received a drop pass from Teng, failed to hit a basket inside, and Long was fouled in the next play. The American guard split his charities from the foul line for the final tally.

"We have to review the tape and look what happened to us in the fourth quarter," said Black.

Eric Salamat scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half while adding five assists and two steals. Seldom-used Chris de Chavez had 12 points and center Justin Chua made 11 points and nine boards.

Teng had 23 points, six rebounds and four assists while Bautista added 16 points. Both made four triples apiece.

Ed Daquioag and Afuang chipped in 10 markers each with the latter grabbing nine boards.

UST fell to a 4-9 card for seventh place and lost to Ateneo for the ninth straight time that began during the second round of the 2007 season when Long hit a buzzer-beating jumper. - RCJ, GMANews.TV
